Left is the valley of Mexico before the development of Mexico City. On the right is today (Lake Chalco is found at the red pin). Wild Axolotls are near extinction due to urbanization in Mexico City and polluted waters. They are native only to the lakes of the Mexico Valley, which only exist as canals and small lakes today. We chose to preserve Lago de Chalco (Lake Chalco) as the conservation for the axolotls.
